In CBS Boston News: ‘First Lady of Roxbury’ Melnea Cass may be one of the most unheralded civil rights heroes

On February 22nd, 2023, CBS Boston News highlighted the late Melnea Cass (aka “The First Lady of Roxbury”) and her contributions to the Roxbury community during her livelihood. Madison Park Development Corporation’s Deputy Director and Roxbury native, Ingrid Tucker, shared her thoughts about Cass and her influence. “She really set the foundation for all of us to follow,” said Tucker when asked how MPDC’s work connected to Cass’ legacy in Roxbury. Cass was devoted to sustaining “multi-pronged community investments” whose purpose was to “increase the quality of life for Roxbury residents.” Similar to Cass, MPDC’s mission is centered around redistributing to and uplifting the community. “The legacy that she left behind really is a reminder for all of us to be courageous, to be unapologetic, to know what the power of community is,” Tucker concluded.
