On Wednesday, July 20th, candidates running for the Second Suffolk Senate seat, Suffolk County sheriff, and Suffolk County District attorney gathered at Hibernian Hall for the Mass and Cass Candidate’s debate hosted by Communities of Color. The debate’s major candidates included state Reps. Nika Elugardo, Liz Miranda, as well as Boston-based pastor Miniard Culpepper, and former state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson. Those running for Suffolk County sheriff included Steve Tompkins and Sandy Zamor Calixte; for district attorney, interim DA Kevin Hayden, and City Councillor Ricardo Arroyo were present. The forum primarily focused on each candidate’s electoral priorities, backgrounds, and, additionally, their provisional solutions for the substance abuse crisis at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, also known as “Mass. and Cass.” According to the Dorchester Reporter, plans for another forum, potentially in mid-August, are in the works.
