What is a Ball?
A “Ball” or an event that is marketed to the “ballroom community” is a dance party with competitions in which participants are judged and awarded prizes based on dance or “voguing” skills, costume or “effects,” and overall performance. performance. Balls as we’ve come to know them today began in Harlem in the 1960s as a primarily Black and Latino/Hispanic countercultural expression of gender variance and performance. Boston’s ballroom community began in the early 1990’s and was initially driven by members of New York groups, but has since grown into a thriving Boston community with an identity all its own.
