SUMMARY:The Puppet Show (Staged Readings + Concert)
DESCRIPTION:Curtain rises on a musical theatre troupe poised to make their big break. Cast as puppets\, the players move effortlessly on their strings when the curtain rises– and struggle against them as the curtain falls. \nSet in Vaudeville style\, The Puppet Show toggles between ragtime and pop\, burlesque and street dance\, patter and spoken word. Projection and movement suggest puppet strings with a clear onstage/backstage contrast that smudges into an unsettling blend of realities. \nThe Puppets are people we know and\, perhaps\, are. As their stories unfold\, ask yourself\, “Who are the puppets? What is the show?” \nStaged Readings:\nFriday\, August 25 @ 7pm\nSaturday\, August 26 @ 2pm \nSong & Dance Concert:\nSaturday\, August 26 @ 7pm \nFor details and tickets\, visit The Puppet Show website at thepuppetshow.msjonesmusic.com. \nPresented in partnership with 3050 Music Group and Hibernian Hall/Madison Park Development Corporation. Made possible with support from the Boston Foundation’s Live Arts Boston grant program. Music education outreach sponsored by Quaver Foundation for the Advancement of Music Education (QFAME). Additional support provided by The Puffin Foundation\, The Lyric Stage Company of Boston\, and 4 Star Dance Studio.

SUMMARY:Bold Moves
DESCRIPTION:Searing and brutally honest\, Bold Moves is the umbrella title of new works by author and playwright Tricia Elam Walker. This quartet of contemporary short plays about friendship\, race\, intimacy\, and responsibility contains haunting themes and a kaleidoscope of human stories. The people we meet in Walker’s one-act plays captivate us as they navigate and try to make sense of their complex worlds. Directed by Dillon Bustin.  Plays include: Bold Moves\, The Widows’ Club\, Mani-Pedi\, and Maternity Ward. \nAbout each play: \nBold Moves: After going their separate ways post-college\, Denali and Zahra spontaneously reconnect one weekend.  Although never romantically involved\, Denali always carried a special feeling for Zahra.  Will his bold offer to treat her like a queen for one weekend backfire? \nThe Widows’ Club: Four widowed women (in their 40s or 50s) from a predominately black\, low income\, SE section of Washington\, DC (or any urban setting) are gathered together in an apartment drinking\, eating and discussing their lives.  The play reveals the bonds of their friendship\, the difficulty of their lives and most of all\, their sense of humor despite the deep pain they have suffered and thought they buried. \nMani-Pedi: Two mother/daughter pairs find themselves in a volatile situation that takes place in a nail salon.  Race\, ethnicity\, language and power all converge as a young Black daughter feels emboldened to verbally assault the Vietnamese mother/salon owner who is providing her manicure/pedicure service.  Mani-Pedi is a textured account of what happens when misunderstanding\, anger and resentment bubble to the surface. \nMaternity Ward: Two teenage girls who attend the same high school happen to give birth the same day and end up sharing a hospital room.  Maternity Ward centers around the juxtaposition of this very adult change in their lives yet the very youthful and naive sense through which they view it emphasized through their discussion about sex\, their children’s fathers\, their own mothers and becoming mothers themselves. \nTickets: $15-$30 \nPerformance dates:\nFriday\, May 19\, 7:00pm\nSaturday\, May 20\, 8:00pm\nSunday\, May 21\, 3:00pm \nBuy Tickets \n  \n \n About the Playwright:\nTricia Elam Walker\, author of the novel Breathing Room and other publications\, is an award-winning writer and commentator recently named Hibernian Hall’s 2017 Visiting Playwright. She has written for National Public Radio\, The Washington Post\, Essence magazine\, the Huffington Post and more. Prior to embarking on a writing career\, she practiced law for sixteen years prior to teaching writing in Washington\, DC and Boston. Proud mom of three and step-mom of two (all brilliant young adults)\, Tricia is currently an assistant professor of Creative Writing at Howard University. Additionally\, she is working on several projects including a children’s book (with renowned Roxbury artist Ekua Holmes)\, a second novel and more plays. A Roxbury native and daughter of long-time community activists Honorable Harry and Barbara Elam\, Tricia lived in Washington DC for 30 years but has “come home” to Boston and now resides in Dorchester with her husband/bae\, Charles Walker. In many ways\, the Bold Moves production is a full-circle coming home celebration for Tricia. SUMMARY:MassQ Ball 2017: Convergence
DESCRIPTION:Imagine an art event where instead of looking at objects on walls we look at each other; where instead of going to see art\, we become it; where people can convene\, converge and celebrate what makes us both unique and unified. \nThis is the inspiration behind MassQuerade Ball 2017: Convergence\, an inter-generational\, cross-cultural exhibition of the arts taking place April 29\, 2017. Join us in honoring the diverse artistic expressions of Boston’s communities of color in a shared appreciation for arts\, culture\, and our collective humanity. \nHeld at Hibernian Hall\, Convergence will feature the artistic process of transmedia artist Daniel Callahan called MassQing (Year of the MassQ)\, in which the face is used as a canvas to create art that expresses internal and emotional aspects of the bearer. In collaboration with Castle of our Skins\, this event will also feature live music\, fashion\, dance\, spoken word\, performance\, delicious food from various cultures\, and it will culminate in a dance party. \nMassQuerade Ball 2017: Convergence. An inter-generational\, cross-cultural exhibition of the arts taking place April 30\, 2017\, from 6:30-10pm. Live MassQing at 6:30PM\, performances beginning at 8:00PM\, PLUS ethnic food\, cash bar\, and a DJ dance party. \nTickets are available only online:\n$20: EARLY BIRD special only through April 19\, 2017 (after which tickets can be purchased for $25 online)\n$10: Children 12 and under/Seniors 65+ \nFor more information\, please visit : https://www.massqball.com/

SUMMARY:Circle Up! (An Investigation of the Academic Achievement Gap)
DESCRIPTION:Circle Up! gives us a chance to see and hear what is going on in urban high schools by listening to the voices of real students sharing reflections about the effects of opportunity gaps on their everyday lives. It investigates the issues of equity and injustice that have created the “achievement gap” and the barriers that maintain it. The achievement gap is a discrepancy in the academic outcomes between white students and students of color\, caused by structural inequality in social institutions\, with life-long consequences. \nThe Youth Underground is an ensemble that creates and performs original theater investigating social issues relevant to young people. The script is based on interviews and conversations with students\, teachers\, and family\, all of whom have been affected by the differences in opportunity. After the hour-long play\, the ensemble will lead a talk-back about the issues raised by students’ narratives. \nTickets: $10/ Community: $5/ FREE to BPS students \nBuy Tickets
