SUMMARY:Hibernian Hall presents 'The Draft' by Peter Snoad
DESCRIPTION:MPDC is CELEBRATING the Legacy of past performances at Hibernian Hall. \nStarting with…\n\n\n‘The Draft’\n\nA filmed performance of Hibernian Hall’s Premiere Production of the award-winning stage play\nwritten by Peter Snoad & Directed by Diego Arciniegas\nThe Draft is an interweaving of the real-life experiences of 10 young Americans – eight men and two women – whose lives were shaped and forever changed by the military draft during the Vietnam War (or “The American War”\, as the Vietnamese call it.) Together\, their stories give voice to the passion\, the anguish\, the fear\, the joy\, the inspiration\, and the intensely personal and collective struggles of a generation. With the U.S. embroiled in ongoing military campaigns overseas\, The Draft asks provocative and relevant questions about moral choice\, the meaning of patriotism\, and the impacts of war and militarism.\n\nWatch the trailer here.\n\nStream on YouTube starting at 7 pm on March 12th until March 18th.\nSTREAM HERE

SUMMARY:Hibernian Hall presents: Bilal Live
DESCRIPTION:presents \n \n \nIf there was one R&B artist for whom the neo-soul categorization seemed limiting\, it was Philadelphia native Bilal. None of his recordings resembled the sycophantic worship of soul artists who thrived in the ’60 and ’70s\, and it wasn’t just because his voice — classically trained\, capable of singing opera in seven languages — was so unique. While some inspirations were detectable\, his recordings were wholly modern and became increasingly creative. His individuality led to being dropped from a major label\, and he went several years without releasing any solo material. Through evangelism from his peers and word of mouth from his early fans\, Bilal gained an insatiable following and was supported by sympathetic independent labels\, where he was finally able to thrive creatively.\n\nBilal Website \nhttp://bilalmusic.com/#bilal-tour \nBilal Facebook \nhttps://www.facebook.com/BILALSOLIVER \nBilal Twitter \n@Bilal \nBilal Instagram \nbilalmusic

SUMMARY:The State of Black Music and the Arts across Greater Boston
DESCRIPTION:Historically within black communities and families\, music and the arts have served to be the most powerful forms for communication\, morale boosters\, and influencers of hope during the most difficult circumstances. Its liberating power has pushed the boundaries of language and imagination\, connected cultures\, tapped into our intellectualism and has penetrated our emotional core\, the heart.\n\nFrom Negro spirituals that provided salvation during slavery times\, and the intricate sounds of jazz by Louis Armstrong\, and Duke Ellington during the Great Depression\, to Alex Haley’s “Autobiography of Malcolm X” and “Roots”\, to the gospel hymns of Mahalia Jackson during the early civil rights movement and a new generation of voices that demand respect\, freedom and equality in songs like Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”\, Rapsody’s “Lalia’s Wisdom”\, John Legend’s “Glory”\, and Beyonce’s “Formation” – the music of these griots and endless others helped us through the toughest of times.\n\nWith the impact of technology\, politics\, radio syndication\, consumerism\, and social media shifting our ways of engagement with music and art\, to societal issues of racism\, mass incarceration\, sexism\, pay inequality and gentrification that affect how people collaborate with each other\, it begs the questions: “Where is black music and black arts headed?” Can our black creative economy continue to ignite a modern-day renaissance and initiate global transformation\, or will it fade into a memory?\n\nJoin us for a two part conversation: a one-on-one conversation with Co-Founder of Black Music Month\, Dyana Williams\, as well as lively panel discussion with music historians\, arts educators and practicing artists of color who discuss the current condition and future of Black music and the arts at a local and national level.\nFriday\, June 14\, 2019\n6:30-8:45pm\nDoors open at 6pm\nTicket price: $20 (all ages)\nHibernian Hall\n184 Dudley Street\nRoxbury\, Ma 02119\n\n\nDyana Williams \n  \nWhether showcasing her talents in broadcasting\, print journalism and community activism or television producing & reporting\, media coaching and lecturing\, she’s remained a constant force in the entertainment industry for over three decades. \nAffectionately named “The Ambassador of African-American Music” by American Express’ Departures magazine\, the Harlem\, New York native began her career at WHUR-FM in the Nation’s Capitol and later\, journeyed back home to the top-rated station\, WBLS-FM.
