SUMMARY:2026 Extreme Heat Preparedness Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As climate change continues to increase global temperatures\, extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and severe. Heat waves can pose serious health risks\, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children\, older adults\, and individuals with preexisting health conditions. \nThe Fairmount Corridor — Dorchester\, Roxbury\, Mattapan and Hyde Park — has some of the hottest summertime temperatures in Boston. It is essential for communities to be prepared with the knowledge and resources needed to stay safe during extreme heat events — and we’re here to help! \nJoin our 2026 Extreme Heat Preparedness Workshop on Saturday\, June 27 from 1-4pm for an informative and engaging session focused on equipping attendees with tips\, tools\, and strategies to manage and mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat. Participants will learn practical ways to stay cool\, how heat impacts us\, how to recognize signs of heat-related illnesses\, how climate change effects extreme heat\, and how to access local resources to protect themselves and their families. \nWe will also be giving away 75 free Heat Safety Kits\, which will include essential items such as electrolyte packets\, water bottles\, UV-protective accessories\, and other supplies to help you stay cool. Kits will be given away on a first-come first-served basis. Everyone is welcome\, but we will limit folks to two (2) Heat Safety Kits per family to maximize our impact across the community. \nAdditionally\, we will be raffling off 5 window-unit Air Conditioners for free (every adult attendee gets one free raffle ticket)! \nThis year\, we will also host a Resource Fair with local organizations and city and state program providers\, offering attendees direct access to services that support lowering your energy costs\, staying cool affordably\, and preparing for extreme heat and other climate-related emergencies. \nLanguage Access: Spanish interpretation will be available during the workshop. While the presentation materials will not be translated\, simultaneous interpretation will be provided during the presentation and as needed throughout the rest of the event to ensure attendees can access key information\, ask questions\, and engage with resources throughout the event. Some Resource Fair tablers will also have staff present who are multi-lingual\, and/or they will have Spanish materials to give out. \nChildcare: Childcare will be provided during the event\, at capacity allows. If you are interested in childcare services\, please indicate this in the RSVP form so we can plan accordingly and follow up with additional details. \nLight snacks and refreshments will be provided. \nContact Andrealis at amartinez@fairmountcollab.org with any questions. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Roxbury Roots: You Don't Know My Story
DESCRIPTION:Roxbury Roots: You Don’t Know My Story – Panel on Life After Wrongful Conviction\nSaturday\, May 30\, 2026\nDoors 6:00 PM | Panel 6:30 – 8:00 PM\nHibernian Hall\, 184 Dudley Street\, Roxbury\, MA 02119\nTickets: bit.ly/ROOTSPANEL\nJoin Hibernian Hall for a powerful and thought-provoking follow-up Roxbury Roots panel discussion featuring 4 of the previously featured speakers whose stories of wrongful conviction deeply resonated with the community during our last event.\n\n\n\nBack by popular demand\, this conversation will move beyond the experience of incarceration and focus on life after release rebuilding identity\, reconnecting with family and community\, navigating reentry\, finding purpose\, and moving forward after years lost to a system that got it wrong. \nThrough honest storytelling and meaningful dialogue\, this event will explore resilience\, survival\, transformation\, and the human spirit. Audience members will also gain a deeper understanding of the realities of wrongful conviction\, the challenges individuals face after release\, and the importance of advocacy\, education\, and community support. \nThis will be an impactful evening of conversation\, reflection\, and learning centered on truth\, perseverance\, and what it truly means to rebuild a life. \nAbout Our Speakers: \nAllah Fu-Quan is a community leader and justice advocate who transformed 28 years of wrongful incarceration into a mission of purpose. Fully exonerated after the State dismissed his indictment\, he became a source of strength and mentorship while imprisoned\, uplifting others in a system designed to break them. Now home\, he continues advocating for justice reform and community empowerment. \nJameel Williams is an instrumental foot on the ground when it comes to being a mentor to youths and is a huge advocate for reform citizenship. He embarked on his journey into the book world five years ago by starting a publishing company by the name of Casual Business Moves and authoring six books with two on the way. Nearly thirteen years removed from a life sentence\, he looks to change his legacy by helping others to succeed. \nDonald Maurice Osgood\, Sr.\, a South End native\, is Director of the Community Healing Response Network at the Boston Public Health Commission’s Office of Violence Prevention\, leading citywide efforts to support healing after violence. He serves on the Executive Board of the Human Rights Forum for the American Public Health Association and is an ordained Pastor committed to service\, equity\, and community impact. \nStephen Pina is a community leader focused on justice\, reentry\, and storytelling. He is the founder of Never Not Working\, serves with the Exoneree Network\, and facilitates the LiFT program at Haley House to support individuals returning from incarceration. After a wrongful conviction\, he was granted a new trial on February 3\, 2025\, in partnership with the New England Innocence Project. His work centers on resilience\, truth\, and community healing.

SUMMARY:Actors' Shakespeare Project Presents: August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS ON SALE NOW!\nBefore Schoolboy Barton played the blues\, before King Hedley II found his halo\, before the Charles siblings fought over the piano…\nThere was Aunt Ester.\n\nDirected by Monica White Ndounou\nIn Partnership with Hibernian Hall\nApril 16 – May 17\, 2026\nHibernian Hall\, Roxbury \nActors’ Shakespeare Project is thrilled to continue and deepen our dedication to August Wilson’s canon by returning to the first chronological entry in the American Century Cycle: Gem of the Ocean. This transportive and nourishing production explores community\, oppression\, and healing – as well as featuring the character that Wilson himself described as “the most significant persona of the cycle\,” Aunt Ester.\nCitizen Barlow thinks his journey is at an end when he arrives in Pittsburgh’s Hill District\, but it has only just begun. Having fled from Alabama and desperate for redemption\, he finds himself on the doorstep of Aunt Ester\, a 285-year-old “soul cleanser” whose parlor is filled with history\, music\, and a lively cast of characters with plenty of stories to tell. As tensions flare between Pittsburgh’s Black community and the local steel mill\, Ester sends Citizen on a fantastical journey to the City of Bones – where he must seek spiritual truth\, and the key to liberation that his new city so urgently seeks. \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE
