SUMMARY:Candidate Forum: A Vision for Boston's Seniors
DESCRIPTION:Affordable Housing Providers Host Boston Mayoral Forum on Senior Issues\n\nVirtual event featuring mayoral candidates Annissa Essaibi George and Michelle Wu to take place Wednesday\, October 27 from 4-5 p.m. \nBrighton\, MA – October 18\, 2021 – A broad coalition of affordable senior housing providers is hosting “Candidate Forum: A Vision For Boston’s Seniors\,” with Boston’s mayoral candidates\, Michelle Wu and Annissa Essaibi George. The event will take place \nWednesday\, October 27 from 4-5 p.m. and is free for all to view online at \nvisionforbostonseniors.com. \nIt will be streamed live and translated for non-English speakers after the event.\nThe event will be co-moderated by Amy Schectman\, President & CEO of 2Life Communities\, and Walter J. Ramos\, President & CEO of Rogerson Communities. Rogerson and 2Life organized this forum to shine a spotlight on the needs and opportunities for older adults in the City. \n  \n“Our more than a dozen co-sponsors\, who collectively represent thousands of older adults in Boston\, came on board quickly to let the candidates know we are all watching and listening closely and that their approach to engaging older adults is of critical importance to a very large portion of the electorate\,” said Schectman. “Collectively our residents have extensive wisdom to share\, experiences to relate\, and insights to offer—but that can’t happen when they have to choose between eating and having heat in the winter or paying for their medicine.  Without affordable housing\, that’s in fact how they must occupy their time. And we all lose as a society by not having our seniors front and center in civic life.” \n“Organizations like Rogerson and 2Life serve thousands of seniors throughout Greater Boston’s diverse communities\, promoting independence\, longevity and a sense of community to those in our care\,” said Ramos. “As we enter a new political and economic era it is critical that we hear directly from the candidates about how they plan to improve life for seniors and how they will address the significant challenges they face.” \nThe event will include introductory statements from each candidate\, followed by a moderated Q&A program led by Schectman and Ramos\, which will incorporate questions from seniors living in affordable housing communities in almost every neighborhood in the City. \n  \nThe candidates will be asked to weigh in on issues related to affordable and available housing in a city that continues to grow faster than expected\, with older adults the fastest growing and most economically challenged group. They will also be asked about senior engagement and community\, accessibility and availability of transit\, City support for adult day health and other critical services\, and equity. \n  \nIn addition to 2Life and Rogerson Communities\, the event is co-sponsored by ACEDONE\, Beacon Communities\, B’nai B’rith\, Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association\, Codman Square Neighborhood Development\, The Community Builders\, Fenway Community Development Corporation\, Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center\, Hebrew Senior Life\, Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción\, Jewish Community Relations Council\, of Greater Boston\, Madison Park Community Development Corporation\, Massachusetts Assisted Living Association\, Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations\, Preservation of Affordable Housing\, South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation\, Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation and Trinity Development Management. \n  \nAbout 2Life Communities \n2Life Communities\, a nonprofit organization founded in 1965\, operates on the belief that all seniors should have the opportunity to live a full life of connection and purpose in a dynamic\, supportive environment – a model called aging in community\, which directly combats the growing public health crisis of social isolation and loneliness amongst older adults. At 2Life Communities\, residents can step out the doors of their own apartments and find friendship\, community\, physical and intellectual stimulation\, and a helping hand day or night. Serving a diverse population of over 1\,530 older adults\, 2Life creates communities with a laser sharp focus on affordability – a tremendous concern in Massachusetts\, the state with the 2nd largest gap in the U.S. between seniors’ median income and the cost of living. \n  \nAbout Rogerson Communities \nRogerson Communities focuses solely on “Senior Living” creating communities where elders thrive. The Rogerson Model incorporates supportive housing and healthcare to help seniors and their families find solutions to aging strong in their community\, providing a sense of dignity across all income levels. Often this means finding housing that is affordable.  With 30 properties and programs under management\, this non-profit offers every aspect of Senior Living: affordable housing; independent and retirement living; assisted living; memory care; continuing care communities; as well as adult day health programs. Programs are staffed by dedicated caregivers who foster a culture of community and maintain the high quality care that is Rogerson’s hallmark. Properties are located throughout Greater Boston and stretch west to Worcester and south to Weymouth. SUMMARY:Deadline for MPDC Scholarship Program Applications
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, through the Ralph Smith\, Danette Jones\, and Haynes Family Scholarships\, MPDC helps several deserving students from Roxbury offset the cost of their college education.\n \nHow We Do It:\nSeveral college-bound applicants from Roxbury are selected annually by MPDC to receive scholarships. The awards range from $250 to $3\,500 toward each recipient’s college tuition and expenses. MPDC’s college scholarship program was established by a bequest from the estate of Ralph Smith\, our co-founder and first Executive Director\, and a gift made in honor of Danette Jones\, our second Executive Director.  These scholarships make a meaningful difference in the lives of our young residents. \nSMITH & JONES SCHOLARSHIP BROCHURE\nHAYNES FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP BROCHURE\nApply for MPDC’s 2021 Scholarship Program\nApply here\nQuestions? contact Yhinny Matos / 617.849.6236 \nMORE ON OUR SCHOLARSHIPS…\nThe Ralph D. Smith Community Service Scholarship\nThe Ralph D. Smith Community Service Scholarship is named after the first executive director of Madison Park Development Corporation.  Mr. Smith was a resident of the old Lower Roxbury neighborhood.  A baker by trade\, Mr. Smith was a leader among the residents of the old neighborhood.  He led the charge to redevelop and restore the acres and acres of land left vacant by urban renewal.  Under his leadership\, the core units forming the Madison Park Village complex were created.  Upon his death in 1998\, Mr. Smith left his entire estate to MPDC to establish a scholarship fund in his name that would help students “who have demonstrated community service in the Madison Park Village and Lower Roxbury areas.”  The Ralph D. Smith Scholarship awards up to $3\,500. \nThe Danette Jones Scholarship Fund\nDanette Jones served as the second executive director of MPDC\, from 1988 to 1998.  Under Ms. Jones’ leadership\, MPDC expanded its housing development programs\, created the cultural economic development collaborative\, and launched its human capital campaigns.  These initiatives included the establishment of youth and workforce development programs\, revitalization of community organizing efforts\, and the expansion of the computer training initiatives.  Among Ms. Jones’s many accomplishments is the successful transformation of the blighted Orchard Park Public Housing Development to the Orchard Gardens Townhouses.  The Danette Jones Scholarship awards up to $1\,000 on a one-time basis. \nEligibility requirements for these scholarships are as follows: \n\nResident of greater Madison Park community as defined by the boundaries of Lower Roxbury – which include and are limited to residences in the 02119\, 02120\, and 02121 zip code areas;\nEnrollment full-time as a high school senior\, progressing normally toward graduation in Spring/Summer 2018 with plans to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;\nA strong commitment to pursuing a bachelor’s or associate’s degree:\nPresent involvement in community service and a strong commitment to continue community service throughout college\n\nThe Haynes Family Scholarship\nThe Haynes Family Scholarship fund is named in recognition of a family staple in the Roxbury community for over 50 years.  Vincent Haynes\, one of the founding members of MPDC\, was a community activist at the forefront of Roxbury’s resident-led organizing efforts against urban renewal during the 1960s.  Roy Haynes is an internationally-acclaimed musician.  Reverend Michael Haynes is a pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury.  Haynes House\, MPDC’s 131-unit apartment building at Madison Park Village\, is also named in honor of the family.  The Haynes Family Scholarship awards up to $3\,500 for enrollment in a certificate program or in a two- or four-year college. \nEligibility requirements for this scholarship are as follows: \n\nMust be a resident of the City of Boston\nCurrent MPDC youth leader entering an accredited two- or four-year college or university\, vocational training\, or certificate program; or\nPresent involvement in community service and a strong commitment to continue community service throughout college\nAffiliation with MPDC (i.e.\, resident\, partnership\, past youth worker)\nMust have GED\, Hi-Set\, or high school diploma
