SUMMARY:Queer People of Color Art Showcase - Fierce Urgency of Now!
DESCRIPTION:During The Fierce Urgency of Now (F.U.N) festival\, we will be celebrating queer people of color. This event seeks queer artists of color to showcase their art with the theme of what it’s like to be a QPOC in Boston. Whether it be spoken word\, a song\, art pieces\, or any medium they choose\, we want them to be able to showcase their work and be listened to. After the showcase\, we’ll have a debrief/panel with the artists. Questions are welcome at the end but we first want to hear from the artists about their experiences\, and what they want us to know about their struggle. They deserve a space to have their voices heard. \nBeing an ally is important. Please come and hear from the marginalized folks in our society\, and support their art. \nProgram: (Subject to change) \n5:30pm-6:30pm \nShowcasing of art. Walk around to view the art these talented young people created. Ask questions and engage. Buy their pieces! \n6:30pm-7:30pm \nVisual performances. Spoken-word\, poetry\, music\, dance\, etc. \n7:30pm-8:00pm \nPanel with the artists. Sit and listen to the current plight of queer folks\, what makes them happy and feel safe\, and what you can do to support. \nWhat is the Fierce Urgency of Now Festival? \nA five-day series of events hosted by local businesses and organizations geared at highlighting the experiences\, challenges\, and opportunities for young professionals of color in our city with the ultimate goal of creating community. \nWith more than 30 events scheduled\, you can plan to learn\, connect\, and have fun all week long\, while also lending your voice to change. Join us September 4-8 to help make Boston more inclusive for all. \nWhy Am I Involved in F.U.N? \nAs a queer Black woman\, my voice is rarely heard. Being able to have a platform to uplift the voices of other marginalized folks in my community is extremely important to me. What also is important to me is getting people that call themselves allies to show up and listen. Learn how you can help\, and what you can do to support the Queer youth of color in Boston. \nIf you are interested in performing please contact Zhane Burton at zhaneburtonr@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:RoxFilm: Fair Game: Surviving A 1960 Georgia Lynching
DESCRIPTION:Directed By Clennon L. King (USA\, 63min) \nAs JFK was making a run for the White House in the spring of ’60\, 24-year-old Navy vet James Fair\, Jr. of New Jersey joined a friend on a road trip home. But their arrival in segregated Early County\, Georgia could not have been more ill-timed. It coincided with the alleged rape and murder of an 8-year-old Black girl\, prompting authorities to finger Fair as the fall guy. Less than three days later\, with no jury present or lawyer to defend him — no physical evidence\, autopsy\, or court transcript — a judge set a date for Fair with Georgia’s electric chair. That’s when Alice Fair mounted an unforgettable 26-month campaign in a fight for her son’s life. \nRoxbury-based filmmaker Clennon L. King dedicates the documentary to the 24 known Black men who were lynched in Early County\, Georgia between 1881 and 1960\, and to his father\, Georgia’s legendary civil rights attorney C.B. King\, who tried to prevent Fair from becoming the 25th victim. \n—-\nYou can also purchase a $25 Day Pass to see all three films at Hibernian Hall (Fair Game\, Codeswitching\, and Protect\, Serve\, & Care): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/roxfilm-hibernian-hall-day-pass-tickets-62452964498

SUMMARY:Hibernian Hall presents: Bilal Live
DESCRIPTION:presents \n \n \nIf there was one R&B artist for whom the neo-soul categorization seemed limiting\, it was Philadelphia native Bilal. None of his recordings resembled the sycophantic worship of soul artists who thrived in the ’60 and ’70s\, and it wasn’t just because his voice — classically trained\, capable of singing opera in seven languages — was so unique. While some inspirations were detectable\, his recordings were wholly modern and became increasingly creative. His individuality led to being dropped from a major label\, and he went several years without releasing any solo material. Through evangelism from his peers and word of mouth from his early fans\, Bilal gained an insatiable following and was supported by sympathetic independent labels\, where he was finally able to thrive creatively.\n\nBilal Website \nhttp://bilalmusic.com/#bilal-tour \nBilal Facebook \nhttps://www.facebook.com/BILALSOLIVER \nBilal Twitter \n@Bilal \nBilal Instagram \nbilalmusic

SUMMARY:The State of Black Music and the Arts across Greater Boston
DESCRIPTION:Historically within black communities and families\, music and the arts have served to be the most powerful forms for communication\, morale boosters\, and influencers of hope during the most difficult circumstances. Its liberating power has pushed the boundaries of language and imagination\, connected cultures\, tapped into our intellectualism and has penetrated our emotional core\, the heart.\n\nFrom Negro spirituals that provided salvation during slavery times\, and the intricate sounds of jazz by Louis Armstrong\, and Duke Ellington during the Great Depression\, to Alex Haley’s “Autobiography of Malcolm X” and “Roots”\, to the gospel hymns of Mahalia Jackson during the early civil rights movement and a new generation of voices that demand respect\, freedom and equality in songs like Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”\, Rapsody’s “Lalia’s Wisdom”\, John Legend’s “Glory”\, and Beyonce’s “Formation” – the music of these griots and endless others helped us through the toughest of times.\n\nWith the impact of technology\, politics\, radio syndication\, consumerism\, and social media shifting our ways of engagement with music and art\, to societal issues of racism\, mass incarceration\, sexism\, pay inequality and gentrification that affect how people collaborate with each other\, it begs the questions: “Where is black music and black arts headed?” Can our black creative economy continue to ignite a modern-day renaissance and initiate global transformation\, or will it fade into a memory?\n\nJoin us for a two part conversation: a one-on-one conversation with Co-Founder of Black Music Month\, Dyana Williams\, as well as lively panel discussion with music historians\, arts educators and practicing artists of color who discuss the current condition and future of Black music and the arts at a local and national level.\nFriday\, June 14\, 2019\n6:30-8:45pm\nDoors open at 6pm\nTicket price: $20 (all ages)\nHibernian Hall\n184 Dudley Street\nRoxbury\, Ma 02119\n\n\nDyana Williams \n  \nWhether showcasing her talents in broadcasting\, print journalism and community activism or television producing & reporting\, media coaching and lecturing\, she’s remained a constant force in the entertainment industry for over three decades. \nAffectionately named “The Ambassador of African-American Music” by American Express’ Departures magazine\, the Harlem\, New York native began her career at WHUR-FM in the Nation’s Capitol and later\, journeyed back home to the top-rated station\, WBLS-FM. SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Dance for Social Justice presented by Danza Orgánica
DESCRIPTION:DSJ workshop as part of the Skeleton Architecture and Summer Stages Dance programming at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Photo Credit: Tony Turner \nDance for Social Justice Workshop for self-identified Women of Color\nMarch 30th\, 2019 1:00-4:00PM\nHibernian Hall\nTo book a DSJ workshop\, please contact: danceforsocialjustice@gmail.com \n  \nThe Dance for Social Justice (DSJ) workshop grew out of Marsha Parrilla’s desire to use dance as a tool for social change. While she was teaching dance in urban settings\, she organically provided her students with dance composition tools with which they explored themselves and their communities. She quickly realized that combining literacy and dance composition was a great way to engage people of all ages in a holistic process of creation of dance for social justice. \nParrilla has worked as an educator in New York City and Boston public schools since 1998 and has a Master’s degree in Dance Education from New York University. The DSJ curriculum is informed by Paulo Freire’s philosophy of education as expressed in Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, her studies on dance composition\, and her experience as a performer and choreographer in the diaspora. \n DSJ is open to youth\, teens\, and adults of all experience levels. Workshop space is limited and pre-registration is required. \nWorkshop Description\nThe body thinks first\, making dance one of the most honest forms of expression. Examples of expressions within activism such as fist-up\, hands-up\, sit-in\, and die-in\, show us that everyday gestures give human beings a unique vocabulary to communicate with people around the world. \nDance for Social Justice is a process-based workshop that delves into the universal language of movement\, to generate conversations and create art around social justice issues in our communities. Participants exercise solidarity through group-work\, the exchange of ideas\, and by engaging on intentional discussions. Through a guided dance composition process\, participants explore basic elements of dance composition to create dance pieces with their groups. An informal showing\, and a feedback/Q&A session\, brings closure to the workshop.

SUMMARY:Radical Black Girl presents: MY CITY\, MY BODY a multi-media performance and dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Radical Black Girl will be kicking off Hibernian Hall’s new artist residency program “SOL*ARTS” with the first iteration of their traveling research and performance project called \n“My City\, My Body or If Concrete Could Talk or For Those Who May Be Traumatized.”\nOn March 18\, 2019\, twenty-five young women and girls from Youth Options Unlimited will join founder\, Destiny Polk\, for a week of embodied research through movement\, poetry\, and storytelling. The intention of this project is to identify and address violence in its many manifestations\, unpack the different ways our bodies carry memory and trauma and examine how we treat ourselves and each other after experiencing violence. Destiny will be leading the group through body awareness\, writing exercises\, and choreography and performance building\, inviting the young women to practice agency over their bodies while inviting them to re-imagine what safety\, security\, and solidarity look like in practice in the city of Boston. \nThe community sharing and forum will be held on Saturday\, March 23\, at 5 PM\, where folks are invited to participate in an open dance cypher lead by Destiny. The group will perform original work based off their week of research together\, and they will close with an open discussion on issues identified by our young people. \nA note from Destiny Polk: “I couldn’t think of a place most calling for healing and most deserving to be heard than my own home city\, Boston. I intend to work with a range of age groups over time\, incorporating the voices of formerly incarcerated folks and those most impacted by violence. The driving question for the larger project is “If your city were a body\, what injuries or sickness has it endured? How would you go about healing it?” I see Boston as the initiator and I look forward to uncovering truths over the next year before bringing the residency and conversation to a national level.”
